Texas Orthopedics Trauma Team Helps Patients Through Life-Changing Accidents

When patients turn to Texas Orthopedics with trauma cases, our team of orthopedic trauma surgeons act quickly to examine their injuries — from the simplest to the most complex fractures — and determine how they should be treated and managed.

Orthopedic trauma surgeons specialize in the treatment of complex fractures, broken bones, and other injuries caused by an external source. Patients arrive to trauma centers by helicopter, ambulance and car after events that range from life-threatening accidents to a simple slip-and-fall.

Injuries our trauma team members often treat and treatment options we provide include:

  • Athletic injuries
  • Hip (pelvic) fractures
  • Lower leg (tibia and fibula) and upper leg (femur) fractures
  • Lower arm (radius and ulna) and upper arm (humerus) fractures
  • Collarbone (clavicle) fractures
  • Peri-articular (joint surface) fractures
  • Peri-prosthetic fractures (fractures around joint replacement implants)
  • Geriatric fractures
  • Non-healing or poorly healed fractures
  • Post-traumatic bone infections
  • Post-traumatic reconstruction
  • Complex fractures requiring multiple surgeries
  • Simple hairline fractures
  • Surgical reconstruction of previously failed fracture surgeries
  • Total hip and knee replacements
  • Soft tissue reconstruction
  • Arthroscopic repair

The trauma team at Texas Orthopedics is staffed by eight fellowship-trained orthopedic trauma surgeons and five physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

The team provides care for the rapidly growing Austin metro area, partnering with four level II trauma centers and one adult level I trauma center in Travis, Williamson and Hays Counties. The adult level I trauma center in Austin is one of only two in Texas that is covered exclusively by fellowship-trained orthopedic trauma surgeons.

By providing coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, at these trauma centers and 20 additional hospitals, our trauma team ensures that every injured patient in Central Texas receives the highest level of care, no matter how complex their case or what time of night they are injured.

With more than 80 years of combined experience caring for injured patients, our orthopedic trauma and reconstruction surgeons are:

  • Drake Borer, MD
  • Austin Hill, MD
  • David Laverty, MD
  • Mark Parrella, MD
  • Vilas Saldanha, MD
  • Blake Schultz, MD
  • Ryan Taylor, MD
  • Blake Turvey, MD

Texas Orthopedics’ trauma team members work closely with hospital staff and leadership to constantly improve the efficiency and quality of care while maintaining an excellent patient experience. Members of the team feature prominently in leadership positions at various hospitals, including network vice chief of medical staff, hospital vice chief of staff, chief of surgery, network chief of orthopedics, hospital chief of orthopedics and orthopedic trauma directors.

Our team members are also committed to training future surgeon leaders: medical students, residents and fellows. This passion for education is reflected in the team’s relationship with Dell Medical School, which dates to before the school’s existence in Austin. When Dell Medical School opened in 2016, Dr. Austin Hill and two Dell Medical School faculty members were a driving force behind the creation of the Orthopedic Surgery Residency program that began in 2017.

Dr. Hill continues to serve as the associate program director for the Orthopedic Residency and is heavily involved in research and mentorship. Dr. Laverty is the trauma rotation director for the residency and oversees all medical student rotations in orthopedics.

“No one chooses to be in a traumatic accident and these events can be life-changing,” said Dr. Hill. “In a moment, your entire life priorities may change as you are hospitalized and recovering from your injuries. Though you may not meet your orthopedic surgeon until you arrive, you can have confidence that the ortho trauma team at Texas Orthopedics will be there to help you through this difficult time.”

If you have questions about our orthopedic trauma services, or would like to schedule an appointment with one of our specialists, book online or call (512) 439-1000.
