Joseph (Joey) Owens, MD is a board-certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physician (Physiatrist) and fellowship-trained Interventional Pain specialist with Texas Orthopedics. Dr. Owens earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science, with a minor in Spanish, from Brigham Young University in Provo, UT. While at BYU, he played football on a full athletic scholarship until repeated injuries redirected his path to medicine. He went on to earn his medical degree at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL. He completed an Internal Medicine internship at Baylor Scott and White – Texas A&M Medical School in Temple, TX, followed by his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School, where he served as Chief Resident. He then completed a fellowship in Interventional Pain Management at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. During his fellowship, Dr. Owens was recognized with the Pain Medicine Fellow of the Year Award for outstanding performance.
Dr. Owens focuses on non-surgical and minimally invasive care for spine, musculoskeletal, and nerve pain conditions. He has advanced training in ultrasound and fluoroscopic-guided procedures, and draws on a comprehensive toolkit — including physical therapy, exercise, image-guided interventional procedures, and medications. He also performs electrodiagnostic (EMG) testing to diagnose nerve and muscle conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and neuropathy that can cause pain, weakness, numbness, and tingling. He is committed to individualized, patient-centered care, utilizing the safest and most appropriate treatment strategies to minimize pain, restore function and improve quality of life for each patient he serves.
Outside of his practice, Dr. Owens enjoys the outdoors, traveling, and trying to keep up with his wife and four kids and all of their many extracurricular pursuits.
