Dr. J. Brannan Smoot is an experienced and passionate orthopedic surgeon in Austin, Texas, and he is part of the team of talented orthopedic doctors at Texas Orthopedics. He is dedicated to helping patients recover so they can do the things they couldn’t do before.
Foot, ankle and knee surgery are Dr. Smoot’s specialties along with a certification as a Sports Medicine physician. From arthritis pain to torn ligaments, to bunions and hammer toes, Dr. Smoot sees a wide range of conditions that affect the knee down to the toes. He sees patients at Texas Orthopedics in Northwest Austin and South Austin.
Dr. Smoot is the Assistant Chief of the Orthopaedic Surgery Division at Dell Medical School and an active member of the teaching faculty of Dell Medical School’s Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program where he is working to advance the field of musculoskeletal care and training the next generation of physicians and surgeons. Dr. Smoot played division I college football at Rice University, and represented the USA in rugby against Canada in 1992. He is married with three children and enjoys adventure travel, water sports and good food with friends.
Dr. Smoot has been named by his peers to the Texas Super Doctors list in 2012 and 2019-2020. Most recently, Dr. Smoot has been recognized locally as a 2021 Austin Monthly Top Doctor.

Meet Laurel Sunde, MSN, APNP, FNP-C
Laurel Sunde, MSN, APNP, FNP-C, graduated from Texas Tech University Health Science Center with a Masters of Science in Nursing in 2020 and Bachelors of Science in Nursing in 2012. She is an American Academy of Nurse Practitioners board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and an active member in ANA, TNA, AANP, and AORN. She is experienced working in Critical Care, Interventional Radiology-Oncology, and Orthopedics.
Laurel is excited to be working alongside Dr. Smoot in both the orthopedic clinical setting and in surgery.
Austin’s been home since 2006 with her husband, son, and daughter. As a formally trained musician, Laurel continues to enjoy finding musical outlets through her church. She also finds joy in running with a goal of running a marathon each year.
