Alex Cruz, MD is a spine fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon with multiple office locations in Austin, Texas. Dr. Cruz is a first generation American, fluent in Spanish, with heritage from the Dominican Republic. He takes a conservative approach in caring for his patients, making sure all options are considered. When surgery is indicated, Dr. Cruz often offers motion preservation or minimally invasive procedures in the treatment of spine conditions. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology at the University of Florida, Dr. Cruz went on to complete a Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of South Florida and an orthopedic surgical residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. Cruz then went on to complete his spine fellowship training with Dr. Thomas Zdeblick at the University of Wisconsin, one of the most esteemed fellowships in the country.

Dr. Cruz has been highly regarded by both his training programs and colleagues, receiving multiple awards and recognitions. As a junior resident, he was awarded the Baylor Orthopedics Wooden Pager award for the best junior resident in his class. He was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society as a fourth year resident for his compassionate care. He received the “Bronze Hammer” award for best overall resident in his program prior to graduating from his residency. Dr. Cruz was selected to represent his training program at the American Orthopedic Association and was inducted into the prestigious “Emerging Leaders” program of the AOA. Dr. Cruz has also completed a prestigious international fellowship through the AO Trauma foundation at the Korea University Guru Hospital in Seoul, South Korea. He is a current member of the North American Spine Society and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
In his free time, Dr. Cruz enjoys exploring new restaurants, hiking, traveling and DJing at home. He is a big baseball fan and enjoys attending live sports games and concerts.
