Orthopedic Shoulder Doctors in Austin, TX

The shoulder joint provides a wide range of motion that supports the arms and hands in performing everyday activities. This joint gives a person the ability to lift objects, reach, rotate the arm, pull, push or throw objects, and carry loads. As with any joint, it can sustain injuries from common and uncommon means, as well as medical conditions.

What are common ways to injure a shoulder?

There are several common and unintentional ways to harm the shoulder. A sudden fall can injure the joint whether it involves falling directly against it, or trying to break a fall with an outstretched hand. Additionally, traumatic blows from accidents or sports collisions, as well as repetitive overhead motions like forceful throwing, can cause significant damage. It  can also be affected if the arm is manipulated in an unusual way while grabbing something, reaching behind the body, sleeping in an abnormal position, or by a sudden jerk. Other factors include health conditions such as arthritis, tears, instability, fractures, nerve-related issues, and inflammatory conditions.

When should I seek medical help?

Medical attention should be sought immediately following a sudden or traumatic shoulder injury. Other warning signs include persistent pain, weakness, limited range of motion, numbness, swelling, difficulty performing daily activities, or suspected dislocation or tear.
