Ai Mukai, M.D.

Ai Mukai, MD is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine. Dr. Mukai's practice focuses on non-surgical musculoskeletal and spine care using conservative modalities such as physical therapy and injections. She also performs electrodiagnostic studies to diagnose nerve and muscle conditions that can cause pain, weakness, numbness, and tingling.

After obtaining her bachelor's degree in Psychology from Barnard College of Columbia University, she went to medical school at Penn State University. Dr. Mukai completed her Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at Northwestern University's Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (rated number one in the country on US News & World Report), earning numerous academic and leadership awards. She then pursued advanced training in non-surgical spine care and interventional procedures, including implantable devices, by completing a Pain Medicine fellowship at the University of California Los Angeles. She has presented at national conferences and authored book chapters and articles.

Dr. Mukai is the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) membership committee chair. AAPM&R is the national academy for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialty. As chair of the membership committee, Dr. Mukai is one of the twelve voting members of the Board of Governors of the AAPM&R. AAPM&R is the largest organization of Physiatrists in the country with over 9000 members representing over 7500 board certified Physiatrists. In her free time, Dr. Mukai enjoys mentoring students and pursuing research. She also enjoys traveling, sketching, and cooking.
